Fulbright Visiting Specialists Program: Direct Access to the Muslim World

July 24, 2007

Eligibility of U.S. Institutions
Institutions with few or no programs/courses related to Islam or the Muslim world are encouraged to apply. Institutions that have well-established Islam-related or area studies programs should clearly indicate that their proposed program for the Fulbright Visiting Specialists Program is in a field/subject that is not currently supported at the institution. Community colleges and minority-serving institutions, such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges and Universities, are encouraged to apply and will receive preference for an award. Visit http://www.cies.org/Visiting_Specialists/us_institutions.htm to view the diverse representation of previous U.S. host institutions. Institutions that have already hosted a Fulbright Visiting Specialist are no longer eligible. While more than one application may be submitted by the same institution, only one award to the same institution will be offered.

Fulbright Visiting Specialists usually hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees and have extensive university teaching experience. They are not necessarily Muslim by religion, but they possess expert knowledge on Islamic faith, culture, society, and/or geographic areas with significant Muslim representation. Persons holding U.S. citizenship or permanent residency in the U.S. are not eligible. Persons who have received Fulbright Visiting Scholar awards (post-doctorate awards) should consult the Fulbright local offices for their eligibility. At the time of program participation, the Fulbright Visiting Specialist should be a resident of his/her home country. Logistical challenges should be expected if an individual from Afghanistan or Iraq is requested.

APLICATION DETAIL:
participating institution

Creative A creative idea will take you into territory that is new for you. It can extend and build upon experiences that you have already had, but it is not a retracing or revisiting. What intrigues you? Where is it being studied, performed, made, etc.?
Feasible Consider budget, safety, visa regulations, availability of resources, and time constraints. Travel to any country under or under will not be approved.
Personally Significant A Watson project is something that you have wanted to do and dreamed about doing for a considerable period of time. You must want to do this so badly that when it is cold and rainy, and you have lost your passport, and your camera has been stolen, and you’re sick, and your best friend is getting married back home, you will still want to stay abroad and pursue your project.
Proposal The proposal should describe your plan for the 12-month fellowship year, including a description of your proposed project and details as to how you intend to carry it out. In addition, you should include information about what it is that prepares you to undertake your project. The specific content of the proposal is up to you, but we require that it not exceed five double-spaced typewritten pages in no less than 11-point font.
Personal Statement In your personal statement, you should discuss how your project is your project–and how it reflects your talents, concerns and commitments. It may include a description of your background, your college years, your professional goals and aspirations, and your reasons for seeking a Watson Fellowship to undertake your project. The personal statement is an opportunity to provide the Watson Fellowship Program with a sense of who you are, including how you would benefit from the unique experiences the Watson Fellowship permits and how you would embrace the challenges of immersing yourself in cultures other than your own for a year. The specific content of the personal statement is up to you, but we require that it not exceed five double-spaced typewritten pages in no less than 11-point font.
Nomination Your college, which has to be one of our , must nominate you; individuals cannot apply directly. Your will explain the procedures for applying to be nominated.

Interview All nominees will be interviewed by a member of the Fellowship Program’s selection committee for about one hour. The interview will occur between the first week in November and the last week in February and will be held on your campus. If you are off-campus on the interview day, then an off-campus interview will be scheduled.

Oxford and the Rhodes Scholarships

Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. All educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees, are paid on the Scholar’s behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each Scholar receives in addition a maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations. The Rhodes Trustees cover the necessary costs of travel to and from Oxford, and upon application, may approve additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel.

To apply, you can use the official application form which can be downloaded in PDF format below. You may also get a hard copy from your University Representative, or from the Office of the American Secretary if your college or university does not have a representative. APPLICATIONS CHANGE YEAR TO YEAR AS DO STATE SECRETARIES AND THEIR ADDRESSES, SO BE CERTAIN TO USE AN APPLICATION FORM FOR THE CURRENT ELECTION YEAR. New forms are posted on this web site every July for the following October deadline and are usually available from University Representatives in August.
